This iconic image of the amazing sprinter Usain Bolt spread around the world faster than it took him to win the 100M sprint at the Rio Olympics.
His casual glance at the camera sums up the confidence and assured nature of someone who is totally at the top of their game.
It’s hard to believe, when someone makes it look so easy, that it has taken an immense amount of time, energy, emotion and commitment to get him to this captured millisecond of glory.
But doesn’t the same apply to those who seek success in the business world?
When you analyse the achievements of great business leaders, no matter what size of company or what sector, it’s never down to ‘overnight’ success.
Like all great athletes, Usain Bolt has a team around him, supporting him to be the very best he can be.
Every incremental opportunity is analysed and developed by an attentive and effective backroom team of trainers, physios, nutritionists and planners, all focussed on achieving Gold.
However, in the corporate world, can we really say the same thing?
Internal politics, jealousy, ambition, different ‘agendas’ all get in the way of success, especially when times are tougher.
How many businesses have suffered because of disjointed thinking, creating ‘Silos’ across functions, unable or unwilling to see the big picture?
They will never experience world class if they allow themselves to be sucked into the vacuum of complacency.
So how can you be more like Usain?
Focus on the big picture but keep an eye on the detail
Don’t be derailed by other’s negativity
Create a world class support team, fully connected and engaged
And don’t forget to allow yourself to enjoy the journey which is definitely going to be much longer than sub 10 seconds!
